A Guide for Making Custom Decals

Post by 667thLegion on Sat Jul 12, 2008 1:47 pm

Ok, so Rook wanted me to show how I make my sticker/decals, so here we go...

1. You'll want to download this. Serif Drawplus version 4. This version is free, and gives you all the things you need.

2. Once you have that downloaded, the fun begins. You will see a box that pops up. Push OK twice. For clones, I usually download one of FC's regular clone decals. You copy and paste to Drawplus. You won't see anything, but your curser will be a small grey box with a plus in the corner above it. click and drag. You will see blue lines outlining a box. get it as big as you want, then let go.

3. Over to the left, you will see a tool bar. Four down, you will see a picture of a pencil. click on that. a box will pop out that has a straight diagonal line and a squiggle line. the diagonal line just makes straight lines, and is alot easier to use than the pencil. Under that, you will see a white square. This opens up my favorite tool, shapes! There a wide variety of shapes and designs to choose from. Every other tool on the right are things I don't use, so I can't explain those. Wink

4. Ok, to get started, I will tell an easy way to make a great clone. So say you want a line down the middle of the chest. take the square tool, and drag it to the size you would like. Once you have that, drag it to where you want. There should be a little box in the right corner of the page that says "Fill". If not, right click up in the top margin. A box will appear with lots of check boxes. Find the one that says "Fill Tab". Now, you can change the color to whatever you want. You can play with whatever you want, to get a perfect clone suited for you.

5. If you make something in a group, and you want to make a group bigger or smaller, click on the top arrow in the left tool bar. Drag a square around whatever you want to grab. This also comes in use when it comes to printing.

6. When you are ready to print, use the top arrow to drag a square around the whole design. Make the design extremely small. It might take a few tries to get it just right. Now, I advise that you open Microsoft Word. Copy and paste the design to Word, and print. Have a minifig on site with you to get the size right. If it's not right, cut the design, shrink or enlarge on Drawplus, and try again. When you get the size perfect, SAVE it on Word. This way, when you are making other decals, you can measure up on the computer.

7. I use a sticker maker like this to make my stickers. You can find one at a craft store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I'm not sure exactly how Uberlag makes his, so ask him for that info.

The best thing to do is just play around with the program for a while to get comfortable with it, then it becomes really fun and easy. If you need anymore help, just leave a post or PM me. Wink

But don't worry if you don't get a reply back for a while if you pm, I'm leaving Sunday for vacation, but will answer any questions when I get back Thursday.

Go to the decal you're interested in, there are two choices: add to cart, and download. Wink Blue Arc

FC is the Fine Clonier; Kamonian, Jared Burks. His site is linked to on the Portal, but here it is:

http://www.fineclonier.com/

And never fear; it's always best to ask questions if you're confused. I'd recommend asking this in a PM to someone in future, though. Wink

Did you use stickers or ordinary paper? Razz

The program he talks about in the guide doesn't work on Macs but GIMP works on Macs. Thats what I have started to use for my comics.
