I never have trouble getting large plates apart, I just slide my nail under it, but for the small ones like 1x2 plates, I put stick them to the bottom of this piece, and they come apart easily when pushed back.

Next time you go to an actual lego store you can buy brick separators for only $2 you can even buy them in bulk. I got 5 last time i went

well other than using the brick remover, which is the best option, i would say using a swiss army knife or a chisel type tool to get underneath it
then you can use your fingernails easily to get into the space made by the chisel
